Performing a Hard Reset on an Apple iPod Classic 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Gen

A full reset is sometimes referred to as a hard reset. Perform a full reset when you want to clear all settings, programs and data from RAM.

Caution if you perform a full reset, your Apple iPod returns to its default settings and looses all information that is not recorded in ROM.

To perform a hard reset:

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and then off.
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Centre Selection buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears for about 6-8 seconds. You can repeat it several times.

Note: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the select wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the select wheel, and not near the centre.

If the above steps do not work, try connecting the iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into the mains, or connect the iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger to press the Centre Select button, and another finger to press the Menu button.
