Performing a Normal (Soft) Reset on an Apple iPhone 3GS

A normal reset is sometimes referred to as a soft reset. A normal reset stops all running applications but does not erase any programs or saved data.

Caution be sure to save any unsaved data before performing a normal reset since a normal reset erases all unsaved data.

  • Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button on the iPhone 3GS.

  • Continue holding these buttons at the same time for at least ten seconds until the Apple logo appears.. The iPhone is now restarting and will soon show the slide to unlock screen.

Performing a Hard Reset on an Apple iPhone 3GS

A full reset is sometimes referred to as a hard reset. Perform a full reset to restore the iPhone to factory settings.

Caution if you perform a full reset, your iPhone 3GS returns to its default settings and looses all information that is not recorded in ROM.

  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
  • Connect your device to your computer.
  • Select your iPhone when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  • Select the Summary tab.
  • Select the Restore option.
  • When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
  • Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your phone).
  • Once the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up.
  • The iPhone displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. Keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or you see "iPhone is activated." If iTunes does not have an Internet connection, you cannot complete this step.
  • The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
