Place iPhone into DFU mode allowing an iTunes firmware restore
DFU means Device Firmware Upload. If an attempted restore using Recovery Mode does not work you will need to use DFU Mode to restore the iPhone. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the complete iPhone OS before attempting the restore.
- Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / PC.
- Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
- After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the Home button until you iTunes displays a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
It can take a number of attempts enable iPhone DFU mode, just follow the DFU mode procedure again. If you are still pressing down both buttons and the Apple logo appears on the screen of the iPhone you have held them down too long.
